The presence of prominent figures from the oil, gas, and technology sectors underscored ASEAN’s growing stature as a pragmatic force in driving energy-based growth. Anwar held discussions with key industry leaders, including OPEC Secretary-General Haitham Al Ghais, TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné, and ENI CEO Claudio Descalzi. Their attendance reflects global confidence in PETRONAS’ expertise and leadership in shaping Asia’s energy landscape.

The Energy Asia summit, hosted by PETRONAS, comes at a critical juncture amid uncertainties fueled by U.S. tariff developments and escalating tensions in the Middle East following Israel’s aggressive actions against Iran. Anwar emphasized the need for comprehensive policies to reduce carbon emissions while ensuring a structured and sustainable transition to renewable energy.

Malaysia, alongside ASEAN allies, remains committed to tripling renewable energy capacity to 11,000 GW by 2030, aligning with the nation’s net-zero carbon vision. Anwar highlighted that energy security is the cornerstone of Asia’s economic resurgence, urging a balanced approach to meet environmental goals without compromising growth.

The summit marks a pivotal moment for ASEAN to assert its role in the global energy transition, with Malaysia at the forefront of fostering innovation and collaboration.
