Istana Negara Affirms Judicial Independence in Judge Appointments

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia,  July 10, 2025 – Istana Negara has issued a statement affirming that the appointment of senior court judges is a matter of national governance, to be handled with integrity and in accordance with established legal principles.

The statement, dated today, emphasizes that the selection process for judges under Section 122B of the Constitution, involving the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Conference of Rulers, must remain free from political interference.

The appointment of judges, including those nominated by the Prime Minister, is conducted transparently and adheres to the principles of judicial independence as outlined in the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 (Act 695).

The statement clarifies that such appointments, including those to the Attorney General’s Chambers, are made solely based on merit and legal expertise, ensuring the judiciary’s impartiality.

This announcement comes amid ongoing discussions on judicial appointments, reinforcing Malaysia’s commitment to a robust and independent legal system.
