PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA March 26, 2026.– Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday announced several important measures to address the surge in fuel subsidies, which have reached nearly RM4 billion per month due to the global energy crisis triggered by the conflict in West Asia.
According to Anwar, fuel subsidies have increased from RM3.2 billion two weeks ago to almost RM4 billion per month following the escalating situation in the region.
“The MADANI Government has acted early to ensure energy supply remains sufficient without compromising the well-being of the people. However, we face significant challenges and need to balance fiscal sustainability with the need to ensure the people continue to enjoy energy supply,” he said.
Among the temporary measures announced, effective 1 April 2026 :
– The price of RON95 (BUDI95).remains at RM1.99 per litre with a filling limit of 200 litres per month for private vehicles.
– Nearly 90% of Malaysians will not be affected as average usage is around 100 litres per month.
– The subsidy limit of 800 litres per month is maintained for e-hailing drivers and motorcyclists.
– Temporary diesel filling limits will be enforced in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.:
– 50 litres per purchase (light private, public, and goods vehicles)
– 100 litres per purchase (public and goods land transport vehicles under 3 tonnes)
– 150 litres per purchase (heavy vehicles over 3 tonnes)
– The subsidised diesel price remains at RM2.15 per litre in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.
– Enforcement will be strengthened to curb subsidy leakages in collaboration with enforcement agencies nationwide.
The government is also introducing the Work From Home (WFH) Initiative (BDR):
– The public sector will implement WFH in stages and selectively (details will be announced soon).
– The private sector is urged to support the government’s call to implement WFH to reduce fuel consumption.
Anwar stressed that these measures are temporary and will be reviewed according to current developments. He also expressed appreciation to vigilant citizens who continue to report suspicious activities at petrol stations to protect subsidies from being abused.
“Discipline and unity are our main strengths. I seek the cooperation of all to continue practising prudence and to understand the steps taken to ensure supply remains guaranteed for everyone,” he said.
