Fahmi Reza Not a ‘Flight Risk’, Travel Ban Claims Must Be Clarified – Syahredzan

BANGI, 8 June 2025 — Bangi MP and DAP National Vice-Chairman Syahredzan Johan has called for authorities to clarify allegations that activist Fahmi Reza has been barred from leaving the country, asserting that Fahmi is not a “flight risk.”

In a statement today, Syahredzan said he initially refrained from commenting on media reports about Fahmi’s claims to allow authorities time to respond. However, no official statement has been issued to address the allegations.

“Restricting an individual’s travel abroad cannot be done arbitrarily and must be backed by strong justification,” Syahredzan stated.

He noted that during past investigations and charges against Fahmi, when he represented the activist as his lawyer, Fahmi was allowed to travel overseas and consistently returned to cooperate with authorities.

“If a travel ban exists due to ongoing investigations, such a measure is unnecessary as Fahmi is not someone at risk of fleeing,” Syahredzan added.

He urged the authorities, including the Home Ministry, to confirm Fahmi’s claims and, if true, provide a clear explanation for the decision.
