LONDON, October 26, 2026 – Grammy Award-winning singer Chris Brown has been sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, over what prosecutors described as a “vicious and unprovoked” attack on a music producer at a London nightclub in 2023, meaning he will avoid jail time.
The sentence was handed down at Southwark Crown Court, Variety reported on Monday, and the news was shared on X by the entertainment publication.
Before passing sentence, Judge Tony Baumgartner addressed the singer directly. “I take account of your employment and long-established career in music. Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone,” the judge said.
Guilty plea in July
In July, Brown pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court to one count of affray for attacking the producer by striking him on the head with a tequila bottle.
His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty. The U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) described Akinlolu, a Florida rapper also known as HoodyBaby, as Brown’s vocal coach. He received a sentence of four months, suspended for 12 months.
The court heard in July that the pair attacked the victim, Abraham Diaw, at the Tape London nightclub in February 2023. Brown was accused of hitting Diaw twice on the head with a tequila bottle, while Akinlolu punched him.
“They continued their assault whilst the victim attempted to flee through the club,” the CPS said in a statement. “The victim was kicked while he was seated defenceless on the floor.”
Diaw was taken to hospital with injuries to his head and knees. A warrant was then issued for the arrest of Brown and Akinlolu, although both had already left the United Kingdom by that time.
Arrested on tour
Brown was eventually arrested in May 2025 after returning to the U.K. as part of his world tour, ahead of a performance in Manchester. The tour, billed as Breezy Bowl XX and marking 20 years since the release of his debut album, went ahead after he was granted bail.
“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” Claire Campbell, a senior prosecutor at CPS London South, said after securing the conviction.
Both men had initially faced more serious charges, including assault and grievous bodily harm, as well as a charge of Brown possessing an offensive weapon. They denied those charges, which were subsequently dropped.
What a suspended sentence means
Under the law in England and Wales, a suspended sentence order means the offender does not go to prison immediately. The custodial term is only activated if the offender commits another offence, or breaches any conditions set by the court, during the period of suspension, in this case 12 months.
The ruling closes a case that has followed the R&B star for more than three years. Brown, one of the best-selling artists of his generation, has had previous brushes with the law, most notably his 2009 guilty plea in the United States over the assault of his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna.
