To “Eat” or to “Escape”? NTHU Uncovers Olfactory Code of Fruit Fly Brain

HSINCHU, Taiwan, Aug. 15, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Director of the Brain Research Center at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan, Ann-Shyn Chiang (江安世), Professor of the Institute for Systems Neuroscience, Chung-Chuan Lo (羅中泉), and Distinguished Chair Professor of the Department of Physics, Ting-Kuo Lee (李定國), led a cross-disciplinary team that has uncovered how fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) rapidly decide to either “eat” or “escape.” The study found that their brains transmit olfactory signals through a hybrid neural network, using so-called generalist neurons to process common odors such as pheromones and floral scents, and specialist neurons to handle the most crucial food-related odors.

Scientists once believed that neural connectivity in the fruit fly’s brain was random. However, Ann-Shyn Chiang discovered that these connections not only include random components but also feature dedicated “specialist lines” — precise and efficient pathways responsible for processing more critical information. The findings shed new light on the neural computing mechanisms of insect brains and may pave the way for future applications that bridge brain science and artificial intelligence. The research was recently published in Science Advances, a leading international journal.

The mushroom body, located at the center of the fruit fly’s brain, is the crucial hub for processing sensory information and supporting learning and memory. For the past two decades, scientists have held different views about the neural connectivity of the mushroom body. Nobel laureate Richard Axel (2004, Physiology or Medicine) analyzed roughly 10% of the relevant neurons and concluded that the neural connections were random. On the other hand, Ann-Shyn Chiang has argued that there may be specific patterns of connectivity within the fruit fly’s brain.

Chiang, a renowned neuroscientist and Academician of Academia Sinica, led a research team at NTHU that used neural connectome analysis, in vivo imaging technology, and computer simulation to study the hemibrain dataset. The team discovered that the connectivity between olfactory nerves and central neurons is neither entirely random nor completely stereotypic, but rather follows a hybrid pattern that combines both random and stereotypic features. Specific neural clusters exhibit clear preferences for connection partners, encoding different odors through both dispersed and convergent patterns, balancing the sensitivity and diversity of olfactory recognition.

The mushroom body in the fruit fly’s brain works like a miniature central processing unit (CPU), integrating various types of sensory input to assist the fruit fly in making decisions in complex environments, such as avoiding risks, finding food, or locating a mate.

The research team at NTHU found that the olfactory neurons of the fruit fly are divided into two functional types: “specialists” and “generalists.” Generalist neurons can respond to a wide range of odors — including food, pheromones, flowers, and trees — and diffuse signals to multiple neural circuits simultaneously, much like a radio transmission. In contrast, specialist neurons manage only key odors, such as those associated with food like fruit. They function more like a dedicated phone line, centralizing key information directly to designated neurons.

Professor Chung-Chuan Lo, from the Institute for Systems Neuroscience, further explained that the hybrid neural connections in fruit flies resemble a strong password — one that blends randomness and order. “Just like the way an ideal password combines familiar words with random characters, such as adding numbers or symbols to a name, the structure may seem illogical at first, but it is both easy to remember and difficult to decode,” Lo said.

Ann-Shyn Chiang noted that the discovery of hybrid neural connections in fruit flies, which combine both random and orderly features, sheds light on how the brain distributes and integrates information. It is also expected to offer new insights into the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease, as well as provide inspiration for the design and application of AI neural networks.

The first authors of the paper are Li-Shan Cheng (鄭力珊), a master’s student from the Department of Physics, and Ching-Che Charng (強敬哲), a doctoral student in the Institute for Systems Neuroscience. The corresponding authors are Distinguished Chair Professor Ann-Shyn Chiang, Professor Chung-Chuan Lo, and Distinguished Chair Professor of the Department of Physics Ting-Kuo Lee. The NTHU research team also includes Kuan-Lin Feng (馮冠霖), a postdoctoral researcher at the Brain Research Center, and Ruei-Huang Chen (陳瑞煌), a doctoral student at the Department of Neuroscience. Feng was responsible for studying the biology and behavior of fruit flies, while Chen used functional imaging experiments to observe how olfactory information is transmitted in neural networks.

Ann-Shyn Chiang pointed out that Li-Shan Cheng and Ching-Che Charng led the team’s core theoretical analysis, while Ruei-Huang Chen and Kuan-Lin Feng were the scientists responsible for experimental testing. “The key to unraveling the neural connectivity of fruit flies is to combine cross-disciplinary collaboration in physics, neuroscience, and behavioral research,” Chiang said.

The NTHU Laboratory of Brain and Intelligence initiated the research on fruit fly neural connections in collaboration with Taiwan’s China Medical University (CMU), the National Health Research Institutes, Academia Sinica, and the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind Research at the University of California, San Diego. The project received support from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), and the Peng Education and Welfare Foundation.

China UnionPay’s Poetry POS Machine Campaign Starts Global Heart-Warming Journey in Thailand

China UnionPay

A Media Snippet accompanying this announcement is available by clicking on this link.

BANGKOK, Aug. 15, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Recently, alongside a Chinese lantern festival held in Thailand, UnionPay’s Poetry POS Machine public welfare initiative brought the poems of Chinese children in mountainous areas overseas for the very first time. During the event, the “Poetry Lights the Heart’s Lantern” Bangkok lantern and poem festival was also staged.

On-site, the overseas charity booth of UnionPay’s Poetry POS Machine, nestled beneath the China-Thailand friendship lantern display, stood out prominently. The large central lantern at the booth was breathtakingly beautiful, while the surrounding lanterns were adorned with children’s poems in both Chinese and Thai.

Thai children recited verses by their Chinese peers, savoring the childlike wonder and joy from China. Visitors to the booth could either make donations by swiping their UnionPay cards on the POS machine to receive a bilingual Chinese-Thai poetry receipt, or record a poetry-reading audio for free and get a postcard with an audio QR code — a unique memento to call their own.

Notably, all donations from the event will be channeled through a local Thai charity foundation to improve the lives and education of local children.

As a leading international card network, UnionPay is widely accepted in Thailand, with its global acceptance network spanning 183 countries and regions.

“We believe that despite the distance between China and Thailand, the sincerity and warmth in these poems are shared by all. For poetry is a universal language of humanity, a home where all souls can find solace; just as lanterns, no matter where they glow, embody our shared longing for light and warmth,” a China UnionPay spokesperson.

To shine a light on the talents of children in mountainous regions, China UnionPay took their poems beyond the mountains and launched the Poetry POS Machine initiative in 2019. To date, the initiative has reached over 400 schools in mountainous areas in Anhui, Henan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Xinjiang, and other regions, benefiting more than 7,000 local children with art education programs.

So far, the campaign has collected over 6,000 poems and published an anthology. Additionally, the first UnionPay public welfare library and 114 public welfare book corners have been put into use in Jinzhai County, central China’s Anhui Province.

The plant-based milk alternatives segment led the vegan beverages market in 2024 due to multiple benefits associated with them for overall health. Such food and beverages are low in calories, high in protein, and essential vitamins and nutrients. These are also lactose-free and higher in fiber. Hence, this segment led the market for vegan beverages in 2024. Such beverages are also low in sugar, are generally considered better for health, and are made from plant-based ingredients such as nuts, seeds, legumes, and other beneficial alternative ingredients helpful for the functioning of the human body.

The vegan functional beverages segment is expected to grow in the foreseeable period due to the high availability of such beverages on online platforms and supermarkets. Hence, fitness enthusiasts and athletes prefer to consume such beverages, which are helpful for their gut health, allowing them to gorge on essential nutrients as well. Lactose-intolerant and vegans form a huge base for the market to get protein and other essential nutrients easily in the form of prebiotics, probiotics, and plant-based energy drinks.

Ingredient Source Analysis

The almond-based segment led the vegan beverages market in 2024 due to its high nutrition, leading to significant demand by vegans and plant-based diet followers. Almond milk is one of the crucial sources for the production of multiple plant-based products, such as almond flour, almond-based beverages, almond protein powder, almond oil, and multiple other products. Such products are helpful to fulfill the essential nutritional requirements of an individual, along with replicating the same texture and taste of regular milk.

The oat-based segment is expected to grow in the forecasted period between 2025 and 2034 due to its lower environmental impact, multiple health benefits, including for digestion, managing blood sugar levels, and promoting easy digestion. Products manufactured from oats, such as oat-based flour and beverages, are easy on the stomach, low in sugar (making it an ideal choice for diabetes patients), and allergen-free. Oats also have a lower carbon footprint compared to other grain alternatives, such as almonds, which works well with the growing consumer preference for eco-friendly food options. Hence, the segment is observed to grow in the foreseen period.

Packaging Type Analysis

The cartons (Tetra Pak) segment led the vegan beverages market in 2024 due to its sustainable composition, inclusive of cardboard, aluminum, and polymers. Such materials are sustainable and hence are highly used by the packaging industry to lower their carbon footprint. They also help to store solid and liquid products safely and hence are highly used by the food and beverage industry. Such positive pointers help the growth of the market.

The cans (RTD functional & energy) segment is expected to grow in the foreseen period due to multiple advantages of the aluminum can, especially in terms of recycling, which will help the growth of the market. Such cans are lightweight, easy to carry, and also economical for the manufacturing industry. Such benefits help the growth of the market for vegan beverages in the forecasted period. Such cans also help to keep the product safe and lower product wastage, along with maintaining its shelf life and enhancing the brand name, which is broadly helpful from a marketing perspective as well.

Distribution Channel Analysis

The supermarkets and hypermarkets segment led the vegan beverages market in 2024 because they aggregate different types of plant-based beverages under one roof, allowing consumers a wide variety. Consumers can also avail themselves of the benefits of coupons and discounts on such platforms, making their shopping experience more delightful and economical. Many consumers also like to see, touch, smell, and sometimes taste products before buying, with some preferring to compare the benefits and ingredients listed in the products in real-time. This leads them to prefer such markets over other alternatives.

The online retail segment is expected to grow in the foreseeable period due to the growth of e-commerce and online platforms, allowing consumers to get the desired product at their doorstep. Hence, the segment is observed to grow in the foreseen period. Online platforms allow consumers to select from a wide range of products, helping consumers to go through the product reviews and select the best and economical option.

End-User Analysis

The adults (19–60 years) segment dominated the vegan beverages market in 2024 due to awareness of health and wellness among adults. High influence of social media platforms and the availability of such products easily on different platforms is another major factor helpful for the market’s growth. The rising number of vegans and plant-based diet followers is also one of the major factors in the growth of the market.

The athletes/fitness enthusiasts segment is expected to grow in the foreseen period due to its health-benefitting properties, such as muscle building and recovery, enhanced performance, gut-friendly properties, endurance, and other similar qualities helpful for enthusiasts. Hence, the segment is observed to grow in the foreseen period. Advancements in sports nutrition science and the availability of a wide variety of specialized products, ranging from electrolyte beverages to energy gels and probiotic-infused snacks, are also expected to drive demand from this demographic. Rising participation in recreational sports, gym memberships, and endurance events such as marathons and triathlons is further driving demand.

Spectrum of Humanity: Convergence Art Exhibition to Be Held in Montreal and Ottawa

MONTRÉAL and TORONTO and VANCOUVER, British Columbia and CANMORE, Alberta, Aug. 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In an era of rapidly evolving artificial intelligence, where is art headed? To explore creative responses to this question, artists from Korea and Canada will come together in a joint initiative The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea (Minister: Choi Hwi-young), the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE, President: Park Chang-sik), and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (Director: Kim Sung-hee) will co-host the Korea–Canada Convergence Art Special Exhibition Spectrum of Humanity, to be held in Montréal and Ottawa, Canada, from Monday, August 18 to Saturday, August 23.

The special exhibition, held under the theme “Art in the Age of AI,” will include an international conference and VR screening, a video art screening and talk show, and an artist exchange workshop. Key Canadian cultural institutions — including the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), Cinéma du Musée, and MUTEK — will participate as collaborative partners.

The exhibition will officially open with the international conference in Montréal on Monday, August 18. Soojung YI, curator at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and Louis-Richard Tremblay, Director of the Innovation Lab at the NFB, will serve as co-moderators. The conference will explore the evolving landscape of filmmaking and artistic creation in the age of AI.

The session will feature four leading media artists from Korea and Canada — including Tae-kyung Yoo from Korea and Nelly-Ève Rajotte from Canada — who will present and discuss case studies of artistic collaboration between humans and technology.

From Tuesday, August 19 to Wednesday, August 20, an artist exchange workshop will be held in Ottawa in collaboration with major national, public, and private art institutions. The workshop will bring together four Korean and five Canadian visual artists, along with two curators from each country, to engage in dialogue and exchange.

Designed as a platform to share current creative practices and artistic concerns in both countries, the workshop will also explore concrete possibilities for future collaboration.

From Friday, August 22 to Saturday, August 23, a screening of seven media art works by five leading Korean artists will take place at Cinéma du Musée in Montréal. This special screening aims to present the current landscape of contemporary media art that navigates new narratives at the intersection of art and technology.

Through this special exhibition, Korea and Canada aim to share emerging practices at the convergence of technology and art, laying the groundwork for sustained exchange and joint creation in the field of convergence art.

KOREA X CANADA Cultural Program: Musical <R;Link> Based on the Battle of Kapyong to Make Its First Overseas Performance in North Vancouver, Canada

As part of the 2024–2025 Korea–Canada Year of Cultural Exchanges, another major program will be presented: the first international performance of the original musical <R;Link>, based on the Battle of Kapyong. This production is hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea, and co-organized by the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange and Hanyang University (President: Lee Ki-jeong).

The musical was developed and produced through collaborative participation by students from the Departments of Theatre at Capilano University, the University of Saskatchewan, and the First Nations University of Canada.

Following its world premiere at CKL Stage in Seoul on July 26–27, the musical will be performed internationally at the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts at Capilano University in North Vancouver, on August 15 (Friday) and August 16(Saturday).

Telling the story of two young people from different cultures and languages who build a friendship beyond borders and stand together for peace, the performance is especially meaningful as Canadian veterans and their families are invited to attend. It is expected to serve as a symbolic stage reaffirming the values of friendship and peace between Korea and Canada through culture and the arts.

KFSHRC Announces 10 Kidney Exchange Transplants Completed in 48 Hours

KFSHRC in Riyadh achieved a global record by performing 10 kidney exchange transplants in just 48 hours, coinciding with World Organ Donation Day on August 13, showcasing its leadership in advanced organ transplantation.
KFSHRC in Riyadh achieved a global record by performing 10 kidney exchange transplants in just 48 hours, coinciding with World Organ Donation Day on August 13, showcasing its leadership in advanced organ transplantation.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Aug. 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) successfully performed 10 kidney exchange transplants over two consecutive days, setting a global record for the highest number of such procedures conducted within a two-day span at a single center, coinciding with World Organ Donation Day on August 13. This milestone reinforces KFSHRC’s position as a global leader in organ transplantation.

This accomplishment reflects the hospital’s high clinical readiness, the seamless coordination of its multidisciplinary medical teams, and its advanced systems for managing donor-recipient matching, alongside its extensive experience in executing complex transplant procedures. All of these factors enable KFSHRC to carry out this type of exchange transplantation with precision and within an exceptionally short timeframe.

Paired kidney transplantation is an innovative approach that matches donor–patient pairs for mutual exchange. In this system, each donor gives a kidney to a patient with whom they have no direct relation, while their own relative receives a kidney from another donor. The process significantly improves compatibility rates and offers new hope to patients who face challenges in finding a suitable match within their families.

Last year, KFSHRC celebrated a major milestone by completing more than 500 paired kidney transplants since the program was launched in 2011. Since launching its organ transplantation program in 1981, the hospital has successfully performed over 5,000 kidney transplants, placing it among an elite group of global transplant centers.

In 2024, the hospital conducted 80 pediatric kidney transplants, the highest annual volume reported worldwide. This makes KFSHRC’s pediatric kidney transplant program the largest of its kind compared to leading centers in the United States and Europe.

This remarkable achievement underscores KFSHRC’s commitment to its vision of being the provider of choice for specialized healthcare. By leveraging its skilled workforce, advanced technologies, and the integration of research and clinical programs, the hospital aims to deliver world-class treatment experiences both locally and globally, while enhancing the Kingdom’s position as a leader in organ transplantation.

KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally in the list of the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centers for the second consecutive year and has been recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East, according to the 2024 Brand Finance rankings. Additionally, in the same year, it was ranked among the world’s best 250 hospitals and included in the World’s Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025 by Newsweek magazine.
