WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 23, 2026 — Gunshots rang out near the White House complex Saturday night, prompting a brief lockdown, heightened security response, and an active investigation by the U.S. Secret Service and FBI.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the incident in a post on X, stating: “FBI is on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds – we will update the public as we’re able.”
According to multiple White House reporters on the scene, approximately 20-30 gunshots were heard around 10:09 p.m. ET near 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The complex was quickly locked down, with countersnipers positioned and D.C. Fire and EMS responding to the area. Journalists inside were instructed to take cover indoors.
President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time and is reported safe, with no indications of a breach onto the grounds or injuries to protectees. Officials have not yet released details on casualties, a suspect, or the exact nature of the shooting.
This marks the latest security incident involving gunfire near the White House in 2026, following earlier events including the April shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and a May exchange of fire near the Washington Monument.
