KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA December 30. 2025 – Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali has announced his resignation as Secretary-General of Perikatan Nasional (PN), effective 1 January 2026, citing that his appointment to the post was under the authority of the coalition’s Chairman, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
In a statement released today on a red background, Azmin said: “I note that my appointment as Secretary-General of Perikatan Nasional was under the jurisdiction of the Chairman of Perikatan Nasional, YB Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin. Therefore, I am also resigning from the position of Secretary-General of Perikatan Nasional starting 1 January 2026.”
Azmin, who is also a senior leader in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), added that he is relinquishing his role as Chairman of the PN Selangor Liaison Body effective the same date.
He emphasised cooperation among all parties, stating: “Cooperation from all parties is highly appreciated and thank you.”
The announcement comes just a day after Muhyiddin Yassin confirmed his own resignation as PN Chairman, also effective 1 January 2026, amid escalating internal tensions within the opposition coalition.
The moves follow a recent political crisis in Perlis, where former Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli resigned, leading to the appointment of a new leader and exposing rifts between PN’s main components, Bersatu and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS).
Analysts suggest these resignations signal a significant leadership shake-up in PN as the coalition navigates internal challenges ahead of future elections.
