KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 — As Malaysia marks over half a century of independence, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a progressive mindset that aligns with modern times, urging citizens to abandon excessive racial prejudices, particularly in urban housing redevelopment projects. He warned that such biases could erode the nation’s social fabric.

Anwar also acknowledged that no law, including urban renewal plans, is flawless. He emphasized the government’s openness to refining and improving existing frameworks to address urban poverty and substandard housing more effectively. “We are ready to enhance procedures to tackle these issues with greater impact,” he said.
Welcoming constructive discourse on the matter, Anwar cautioned against narratives that fuel racial tensions. “If the issue is about thresholds, propose alternatives. If it’s about gentrification, let’s discuss it with comprehensive solutions, not perpetuate racial hatred,” he urged.
The Prime Minister stressed that the government’s authority must be channeled toward uplifting living standards and fostering public welfare. While Malaysia takes pride in its skyscrapers and iconic landmarks, Anwar warned that ignoring pressing issues like urban poverty would be a glaring injustice.
In the spirit of independence, he called for collective efforts to pursue fair and practical solutions that deliver justice and shared prosperity for all Malaysians.
