PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA, Oct 21, 2025– Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim hailed the appointment of Sanae Takaichi as Japan’s new prime minister on Tuesday, describing it as a “landmark” moment in the nation’s political history.
In a statement released today, Anwar praised Takaichi’s rise to office as Japan’s first woman to hold the position, calling it a testament to her determination and the steady progress of the country’s democratic institutions.
“Malaysia values its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Japan, built on trust, innovation, and a shared commitment to regional stability and sustainable growth,” Anwar said. He expressed eagerness to host Takaichi in Kuala Lumpur next week for the ASEAN-Japan Summit, where leaders aim to further solidify bilateral ties.
Anwar also thanked outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba for his visit to Malaysia earlier this year, which he said “strengthened the enduring friendship between our two nations.”
Takaichi’s ascension comes amid ongoing efforts to bolster Asia-Pacific alliances, with the upcoming summit expected to address key issues like economic resilience and security cooperation.
