Anwar Ibrahim Addresses UMNO Leaders on Royal Addendum Amidst Najib Razak’s Legal Proceedings

PUTRAJAYA, July 19, 2025 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has responded to concerns raised by UMNO division leaders regarding a royal addendum that could impact the sentence of former Prime Minister Najib Razak. The addendum, confirmed by the Pahang palace in a letter dated January 4, 2025, and referenced in a Court of Appeal verdict on January 6, 2025, has prompted calls for its immediate enforcement to allow Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

During a press conference following Friday prayers at a mosque in Putrajaya yesterday, Anwar acknowledged that over two-thirds of UMNO division leaders had raised the issue in a late-night meeting on July 17, 2025. He stated, “Firstly, this matter is referred to the courts, and I do not go above the courts in this matter.”

Anwar further informed that he is ready to meet with UMNO President Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other leaders to discuss the addendum, aiming to preserve harmony within the coalition. “I have also informed the Umno president and its leadership that I am ready to meet with them to explain if needed, in order to preserve the harmony (between parties in the coalition),” he said.

The royal addendum has been a contentious issue, with Najib currently serving a 12-year prison sentence for misusing RM42 million of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds. The Pahang palace’s confirmation of the addendum’s existence has fueled debates about its validity and implementation, especially as the government disputes its recognition.

Wangsa Maju UMNO chief Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Shafei Abdullah announced that 160 out of 191 UMNO divisions are urging Anwar to facilitate Najib’s transition from Kajang Prison without further delay. This call comes amidst ongoing legal battles, including Najib’s pursuit of a judicial review to compel authorities to confirm and execute the alleged royal order.

Anwar’s stance reflects a careful balance between respecting judicial processes and addressing political pressures within his coalition. The Prime Minister’s willingness to engage in discussions with UMNO leaders underscores the delicate nature of the issue, which continues to draw significant attention both legally and politically.

As the case progresses, all eyes remain on the courts and the potential implications for Najib’s sentence and the broader political landscape in Malaysia.
