KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, , July 24, 2025 –
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail concluded his response to queries regarding the presentation of the 2023 Annual Report of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday afternoon. In a statement, the Minister expressed gratitude to fellow Members of Parliament for their participation in the debate and shared a summary of his closing remarks.

The report serves as a critical reflection on the effectiveness of policies and enforcement practices under the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN). The Ministry welcomes all issues identified by SUHAKAM and has undertaken phased improvements across five key clusters: citizenship, detention, security, immigration, and welfare of personnel. Among the significant initiatives implemented or in progress are:
✅ Constitutional Amendments to ensure non-discriminatory citizenship rights based on gender, a major step toward equality for Malaysian citizen parents.
âś… The MEKAR Program, which has reached 252,439 individuals, bringing birth registration, identity card, and citizenship services directly to grassroots communities.
âś… Improvements to prison and lock-up facilities, including reconstruction, installation of CCTV, and the establishment of special zones for vulnerable detainees.
✅ Strategic collaborations to combat human trafficking and forced labor, involving NGOs, employers, and international organizations.
Saifuddin emphasized KDN’s commitment to balancing national security needs with respect for human rights principles. “We believe that peace and well-being for the people can only be achieved when all parties are protected and their rights respected, regardless of background,” he stated.
The MADANI government, he added, is one that listens, dares to change, and continuously improves weaknesses—a commitment to the people. This stance aligns with recent international developments, including heightened scrutiny of human rights in conflict zones like Gaza, where over 41,000 deaths have been reported since October 2023, prompting global calls for action.
Social media responses to the Minister’s statement have been largely positive, with users applauding the government’s proactive approach. However, some have called for faster implementation of reforms, particularly in detention and immigration. As Malaysia navigates its role in the global human rights landscape, KDN’s efforts under Saifuddin’s leadership aim to set a benchmark for balancing security and rights.
