AG’s Chambers Warns Against Improper Display of Jalur Gemilang, Urges Reporting to Authorities

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia, August 15, 2025 – The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has issued a stern warning over the improper display, hoisting, or installation of the Malaysian flag, emphasizing that such actions undermine the nation’s sovereignty and could lead to legal consequences.

In a media statement released today, the AGC highlighted several recent incidents that have drawn public attention, including:

  • An inverted Malaysian flag displayed at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang;
  • An inverted flag at a school in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan;
  • An incomplete depiction of the flag in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results report book; and
  • Incomplete flag representations on the official social media accounts of newspapers Sin Chew Daily, Kwong Wah Yit Poh, and Harian Metro.

The chambers stressed that all parties bear the responsibility to honor the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of national sovereignty and to adhere strictly to existing laws and guidelines governing its use.

“Any offense related to the improper installation or display of the Malaysian flag that may cause confusion, misunderstanding, or public unease could result in legal action,” the statement read.

The AGC also cautioned the public against taking vigilante measures against those suspected of such violations. Prohibited actions include:

  • Storming the premises of suspected parties;
  • Spreading personal information or making baseless accusations on social media;
  • Inciting provocation or threats against involved individuals or organizations; and
  • Assuming the role of authorities, such as ordering the removal of flags or seizing materials without legal authority.

Instead, the public is urged to channel any complaints or information directly to the relevant authorities for appropriate action, in line with the rule of law.
