PM Anwar Reveals Trump’s Tariff Review Pledge, ASEAN Summit Attendance During RMK13 Tabling

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, July 31, 2025 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today that US President Donald Trump has agreed to review tariffs imposed on Malaysia, following a phone conversation early this morning, as part of his speech during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) in Parliament.

In the session, Anwar detailed that he spoke with Trump at 6:50 a.m., where the US leader expressed utmost respect for Malaysia’s influential role in facilitating the resolution of the Thailand-Cambodia conflict. He attributed the success to the ASEAN framework, the positive attitudes of the involved nations, and cooperation from both the United States under Trump and China under President Xi Jinping.

The discussion also covered trade tariffs, emphasizing principles of free trade. Anwar explained that after providing clarifications, involving inputs from the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and the United States Trade Representative, Trump consented to postpone his tariff announcement until tomorrow. The Prime Minister expressed hope that the review would benefit Malaysia’s economy without imposing undue burdens.

Additionally, Trump confirmed his attendance at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October, underscoring strengthened bilateral ties between Malaysia and the US.

Anwar highlighted these developments as a recognition of Malaysia’s diplomatic capabilities and ASEAN’s unity, aligning with the MADANI government’s focus on international collaboration for national progress.
