MELAKA, November 1, 2026 – Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Kelebang state seat, Farzana Hayani Mohd Nasir, said fighting for the welfare of young people, women, fishermen and padi farmers would be among her priorities if voters give her the mandate in the 16th Melaka state election, Bernama reported.
The 26-year-old said the commitment was based on what she had seen and heard while meeting local residents on the ground to identify the issues and challenges facing each of those groups, according to Bernama.
Farzana Hayani, who is also the Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) chief for Tangga Batu and is known locally as the granddaughter of “Mat Pop”, said young people were among those who needed special attention, especially when it came to job opportunities.
“Many young people in Kelebang itself work outside the area, outside Melaka. So we need to create more job opportunities for young people, and on education too, we want to resolve that issue for the youth,” she said.
She was speaking as a guest on Bernama TV’s 16 Minit: Perspektif Melaka programme, held in conjunction with the state election at the Bernama Operations Centre in Ayer Keroh on Sunday.
Household income and fishing jetties
Farzana Hayani said the welfare of women also needed attention, particularly housewives who face the challenge of helping to raise family income to meet household needs.
“For women, because I am the only woman candidate in Kelebang, we want to think about how we can increase their household income,” she said, citing a meeting with a housewife who has eight children and whose husband works as a security guard.
On fishermen, she said infrastructure was among the things identified for improvement, including at jetties, as raised in her meetings with the fishing communities at the Kampung Pinang jetty and the Muara Sungai Klebang jetty. She said there were problems with facilities, run-down houses and drainage, and that at the Kampung Pinang jetty there were broken stairs and a drainage system that reportedly had to be repaired every three months.
As the granddaughter of a padi farmer, she said farmers were close to her heart and that she was committed to going to the ground to understand their needs and problems. If elected, she said she planned to hold more walkabouts and open complaint counters at busy spots such as night markets, so that residents could raise their problems more easily.
“A people’s representative needs to go down to the ground before the election, during the election and after the election, more often,” she said.
Four-cornered fight
Farzana Hayani faces a four-cornered contest in Kelebang against Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Wira Lim Ban Hong, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) candidate Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad and Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) candidate Young Jie Yu, according to the candidate list published by the Election Commission (SPR). Her pledges are her own campaign commitments; the Bernama report did not carry responses from the other candidates.
She previously contested the Sungai Rambai seat for PH in the 15th Melaka state election, Bernama has reported.
Key dates
The Melaka State Legislative Assembly was dissolved with effect from September 23. The SPR has fixed November 10 for early voting and November 14 as polling day, with 79 candidates contesting the 28 state seats over a 14-day campaign.
