WASHINGTON, October 26, 2026 – United States President Donald Trump has launched a lengthy attack on comedian Bill Maher, branding the HBO host a “complete and total loser” and telling him “Don’t call me anymore” in a roughly 1,300-word Truth Social post, just days after the pair dined together at the White House for a second time.
Variety reported on Monday that Trump lashed out on Sunday after tuning into Maher’s late-night programme, “Real Time With Bill Maher”, and the story was shared on X by the entertainment publication.
“Let’s talk about this COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSER, Bill Maher,” Trump wrote at the top of the post.
‘Low Rated Show’ on ‘Low Rated HBO’
The president described “Real Time” as a “Low Rated Show” on what he called an “equally Low Rated HBO”, saying the network was “once, long ago, a Network of Quality and Excitement — But that’s all gone.” He also claimed Maher had long wanted him as a guest on the programme and said that would never happen.
“I never watched your show much, but I will never watch it again, because it is nothing more than FAKE NEWS that America, and the World, is unfortunately subjected to,” Trump wrote. He also told Maher to switch off what he called his “Laugh Machine” and said he would ask Republicans to stop covering the comedian.
Claims about the White House dinner
Much of the post focused on the latest dinner, which Trump said was also attended by sports broadcaster Stephen A. Smith and musician Kid Rock. According to Variety, Trump alleged that Maher was drunk and had a drink in hand while touring the White House, called him a “major POTHEAD” and said the comedian “looked like hell this time.”
“It didn’t last four hours, it lasted two hours, maybe less, and everybody was happy,” Trump wrote. “We have the timestamps. I learned nothing, and felt it was a waste of time.”
Trump placed responsibility for both meetings on Chuck LaBella, a business associate of Maher’s who he said had worked as a “gofer” on NBC’s “The Apprentice”. He claimed LaBella and Kid Rock repeatedly pushed for a sit-down and that LaBella phoned 10 times before the second dinner was arranged. “My first response was, ‘Fellas, this guy’s a Goofball,'” Trump wrote.
Disputes over polls, Iran and California
The president also disputed several points Maher had made on air since the visit. He rejected the comedian’s comments on his approval ratings and support among Republicans, citing CNN polling that he said put him at 98% to 99% within the party, and defended his endorsement record. He took issue with Maher’s views on Iran and accused him of lying about illegal voting in California.
Trump praised Karoline Leavitt for her appearance as a guest on “Real Time”, saying she “was GREAT on the show”, but described the person putting questions to her as a “biased, dumb SLEAZEBAG”. He also denied ever planning a pool for the White House press briefing room, writing: “I am thinking about moving the Press, and putting them in a different location, but I will use that location for very badly needed space.”
From ‘gracious’ to ‘goofball’
The outburst marks a sharp turn in a relationship that had appeared to thaw. Maher first dined with Trump at the White House in late March 2025, at a meeting brokered by Kid Rock, and afterwards described the president on “Real Time” as “gracious and measured”.
Maher, a long-time Trump critic, has hosted “Real Time With Bill Maher” on HBO since 2003.
