In remarks broadcast on Iranian state television on Saturday, Pezeshkian said: “We were having negotiations, the cowards (Americans) messed everything up… I still think we should go and conclude it,” Reuters reported.
Al Jazeera said the interim deal had been aimed at ending the war with the United States and Israel, which began with US-Israeli strikes on February 28. Pezeshkian’s comments come amid growing fears that fighting could resume imminently, after US President Donald Trump told a rally in Florida on Friday that he “may do another little Epic Fury”, using the codename for the US campaign against Iran.
CBS News reported that Pezeshkian also said in a speech on Saturday that many Iranians were struggling to put food on the table because of wartime conditions, and called for an end to what he described as a “state of neither war nor peace”, without saying how.
Other Iranian officials struck a harder tone. Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said Tehran would not “wait for permission to defend itself”. “Our position is clear: we do not flee from dialogue for peace, and we do not hesitate in defending the country,” she wrote, according to Al Jazeera. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that even limited strikes would trigger a response “several times greater”, the semi-official Fars News Agency reported. Armed forces chief of staff Ali Abdollahi said US military ships would not be allowed into the Gulf “under any circumstances and at any time”, adding that Trump would take that dream “to his grave”, according to Iranian state television.
In Washington, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump had been briefed on options including strikes on nuclear facilities and infrastructure and operations against Iranian-controlled islands, though no final decision had been announced.
Also on Saturday, judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei met Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to discuss tackling corruption and seeking compensation for Iranians affected by the war, Al Jazeera reported. Khamenei succeeded his father, who was assassinated in the opening strikes of the war, and has not been seen in public since taking the post in early March. Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf was reported to have met him earlier in the week.
Both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu face elections in the coming days, with Israelis voting on October 27 and the US holding midterm elections on November 3. The International Atomic Energy Agency’s chief, Rafael Grossi, said on Friday that the agency was ready to verify Iran’s nuclear activities, and that there would be no lasting solution without a diplomatic agreement.
