Berlin-based sales outfit Picture Tree International has boarded worldwide sales on “Raging Moms” (Komplizinnen), a German ensemble comedy about four women who decide, in the middle of their lives, that they have had enough of being reasonable, Variety reported exclusively on Tuesday.
The company, known as PTI, will give the film a market premiere for buyers at the upcoming American Film Market, ahead of a domestic release. Leonine Studios is set to open “Raging Moms” in German cinemas on 21 January, according to the trade publication, which shared the news on X.
The story follows four women whose lives are turned upside down by menopause, empty nests and romantic misadventures. As they abandon familiar roles and make increasingly reckless choices, their paths collide in what is billed as a comedy about friendship and the messy business of starting over.
The cast is led by Laura Tonke, known for “Amrum” and “The People vs. Fritz Bauer”, Heike Makatsch of “The Book Thief” and “Love Actually”, Katharina Marie Schubert from “The Teachers’ Lounge” and Anne Ratte-Polle, seen in “Dark” and “Undine”. They are joined by Tom Schilling (“Never Look Away”, “Generation War”), Christoph Maria Herbst (“Contra”, “How About Adolf”) and Trystan Pütter (“Babylon Berlin”, “Toni Erdmann”).
“Raging Moms” is written and directed by Sonja Heiss, whose earlier feature “When Will It Be Again Like It Never Was Before” earned her a German Film Award nomination for Best Director.
The film is a Wiedemann & Berg Film production, produced by Johanna Bergel, Quirin Berg and Max Wiedemann. The company is behind some of the best-known German titles of recent decades, including “The Lives of Others”, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the Oscar-nominated “Never Look Away”, and the hit comedies “Welcome to Germany” and “Weekend Rebels”. The new film was backed by the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), the German Federal Film Board (FFA), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and FFF Bayern.
The pick-up sits within a wider PTI slate heading to the American Film Market, one of the film industry’s major annual sales gatherings, where distributors from around the world come to buy titles for their territories. PTI will also hold market screenings of a newly remastered 4K version of “The Experiment”, the prison-study thriller from “Downfall” director Oliver Hirschbiegel, and Constantin Film’s “The Perfect Holiday”, Bora Dagtekin’s sequel to “The Perfect Secret”, itself the German remake of the Italian hit “Perfect Strangers”.
Selected buyers will also be offered previews of “Matarifes – Hunger for Change”, a Uruguayan period thriller directed by Rafael and Bernardo Antonaccio, whose previous credits include “In the Quarry”, and “Push the Button”, a Swedish tech satire directed by Anton Källrot and featuring Noah Taylor.
Further down PTI’s line-up are the historical biopic “Rafaela”, starring Loreto Mauleón, and “The Stolen Child”, an English-language medieval fantasy epic written and directed by Sebastian McKinnon.
Comedies centred on women in midlife have become a steady draw for audiences in Europe and beyond, and the casting of several of Germany’s most recognisable actresses in “Raging Moms” positions the film as one of the more commercial German titles on offer to international buyers this season. Its January theatrical date gives distributors a clear window to judge the film’s home-market performance before committing to releases elsewhere.
