SACRAMENTO, Oct 1 2026 — California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order directing state agencies to keep calling the technology “Artificial Intelligence” or “AI,” a day after the White House rebranded it “Super Intelligence.”
In a post on X on Oct 1, Newsom wrote: “I just signed an executive order permanently declaring Artificial Intelligence ‘Artificial Intelligence’ in California. You’re welcome, America.” The post, which included an image of Executive Order N-10-26 dated Sept 30, 2026, drew more than 26,000 likes and over two million views.
The order requires every agency and department under his authority to use “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI,” notwithstanding any rebranded or different terminology used by the federal government, unless inconsistent with the law. A preamble says a name change cannot distract from what Newsom calls an “impotent and craven failure” to address documented security and safety risks. The order says it is “informed by common sense” and creates no enforceable rights.
In a statement from the governor’s office, Newsom said: “Super intelligence is clearly not coming from the White House – that’s why California continues to lead.”
The move follows a Trump executive order directing the federal executive branch to stop using “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” and to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official correspondence, public communications, websites and policy documents. Trump has said the word “artificial” does not fit, describing the technology as extreme and superior. The same day, he and the chief executives of several major technology companies signed a White House Accord on Super Intelligence, a voluntary commitment on internal controls for frontier models.
On Sept 30, Newsom also signed a package of AI bills covering workplace surveillance, notice of technology-driven job displacement, and the use of AI in health care.
