JAKARTA, Sept 18 2026 — UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on party members to receive the conditional pardon granted to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak with gratitude, while maintaining decorum and respecting the process set by the authorities.
Zahid said UMNO had, from the outset, taken a restrained and humble approach in pursuing the application through the proper channels.
“Respect for the institution of the King, the supremacy of the Constitution and the sovereignty of the law will continue to be our principle,” he told reporters after attending the Halal Summit 20 here today.
He described the decision as a highly meaningful development that brought great relief to Najib, his family and the wider UMNO family, who he said had long held hope and prayed for him.
“With all humility, UMNO expresses its boundless gratitude for this development. His Majesty’s grace has brought immense relief to Najib and his family, and it will always be remembered with deep appreciation by the entire UMNO family,” he said.
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today granted a conditional pardon allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
The pardon is subject to payment of a RM50 million fine and compliance with conditions imposed throughout the house arrest period.
The Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department said the order was decided at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, held at Istana Negara today.
