KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 2026 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today granted a conditional pardon to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
The order is subject to Najib paying a RM50 million fine.
The Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department said the decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya at Istana Negara today.
“He must comply with the conditions imposed and, should he fail to comply with any of these conditions, the conditional pardon will be revoked and he must immediately serve the remainder of his sentence in prison,” it said in a statement.
Najib, 73, has been serving his prison sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022.
The conviction for which he is now serving time involves the misappropriation of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds. A separate case linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) remains before the courts and is at the appeal stage in the Court of Appeal.
The Federal Territories Pardons Board is chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and comprises the Attorney General, the minister responsible for the Federal Territories, and three other members appointed by His Majesty.
Media personnel gathered at Istana Negara from early this morning to follow developments surrounding the meeting.
Vehicles carrying Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh and Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar were earlier seen entering the main gate of Istana Negara.
Hannah was then seen leaving first, followed by Mohd Dusuki at 9.43 am.
In July 2020, the High Court sentenced Najib to 12 years in prison and fined him RM210 million after finding him guilty of seven charges involving the misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC International funds.
The conviction and sentence were upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2021 and the Federal Court in August 2022.
At its 61st meeting on Jan 29, 2024, the Pardons Board reduced the former Pekan member of parliament’s prison sentence from 12 years to six years and the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.
On Dec 26, 2025, the High Court sentenced Najib to 15 years in prison and imposed a total fine of RM11.4 billion after finding him guilty of four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.3 billion in funds linked to 1MDB.
He filed an appeal against that decision on Dec 29, 2025.
In a separate civil suit, the High Court on March 31, 2026 ordered Najib to pay USD1.3 billion to SRC International after finding him liable for breach of fiduciary duties, abuse of position and misappropriation of company funds for personal benefit.
Execution of that judgment has been stayed pending the outcome of his appeal.
Najib also faces two other civil suits — one filed by SRC International and Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd in 2021, and a USD5.64 billion suit filed by 1MDB and four of its subsidiaries. Those cases remain pending before the courts.
