NEW DELHI, Sept 12 2026 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim used his visit to the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit to hold one-on-one meetings with representatives of DRB-HICOM, SEGULA Technologies India, AWL Agri Business Limited and Motherson Group, discussing opportunities to expand investment and cooperation in strategic sectors between Malaysia and India.
The meetings took place at Le Meridien Hotel in conjunction with Anwar’s working visit. He said they reflected industry confidence in Malaysia’s economic potential and direction. “The MADANI Government will continue to facilitate quality investments that strengthen local industries, create high-value jobs and ensure the benefits are felt by the people,” he posted.
The first session was with DRB-HICOM representatives and their strategic partners to explore automotive industry cooperation in India. Malaysian players including Proton have previously considered the Indian market, one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing auto markets, though Proton vehicles are not currently manufactured or sold there.
Anwar then met SEGULA Technologies India leadership. The global engineering and technology firm expressed its intention to set up a Global Engineering Centre in Malaysia by the end of 2026. The centre would hire Malaysian talent and apply artificial intelligence expertise in automotive, aerospace, energy and advanced manufacturing.
Discussions with AWL Agri Business Limited, a major Indian agribusiness player, focused on increasing purchases from Malaysian suppliers. The company has already imported about RM1.5 billion worth of Malaysian palm oil products, opening scope for further cooperation in palm oil, specialty fats, oleochemicals and other downstream products.
Motherson Group representatives outlined plans to expand their information technology and digital solutions business in Malaysia. The group said it would draw on local talent, digital infrastructure and Malaysia’s position as a gateway to regional markets. Reports indicated this marked the company’s entry into Malaysia.
The business engagements formed part of a packed schedule that included a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House. The two leaders reviewed progress in trade, investment, defence, semiconductors, infrastructure and the digital economy, building on Modi’s visit to Malaysia earlier in 2026. Malaysia is attending the summit as a BRICS partner country.
Anwar, who is also finance minister, was accompanied by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani and Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. The visit is Anwar’s second to India as prime minister.
