Speaking at a White House Rose Garden back-to-school event on August 24, 2026, Trump said: “Every public school in America is now on notice that if they tell a child that they’re trapped in the wrong body, they are committing child abuse.”
He linked the warning to broader efforts to reshape K-12 education, adding: “And as we remove the far-left extremism from the classroom, we’re taking historic action to ensure that every child in America has access to a first-class education.”
The remarks come amid intensified federal enforcement against school policies on gender identity. The Trump administration has used the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) to investigate districts accused of socially transitioning students without informing parents.
In late July, the Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office, working with the Justice Department, targeted Anne Arundel County Public Schools in Maryland and Ann Arbor Public Schools in Michigan. Officials said those districts improperly withheld information about students’ gender identity from parents, treating it as confidential medical data. Parents in Maryland reported discovering their daughter was being referred to by male pronouns at school only after receiving an email.
Administration officials have warned that schools continuing what they describe as “radical gender ideology” risk civil rights investigations and the loss of federal funding. Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Justice Department leaders have emphasized restoring parental rights and recognizing biological sex in school policies.
The president’s statement quickly circulated online through video clips shared by accounts across X, amplifying the message that schools must prioritize academics over gender-related guidance. Supporters framed the comments as a defense of children and parental authority, while the administration positions the actions as a continuation of earlier executive orders banning federal support for gender ideology and critical race theory in public schools.
