TOKYOJune 10, 2026 — Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim was warmly received by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during an official welcoming ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo today.
The leaders shook hands in front of the Malaysian and Japanese flags, followed by a bilateral summit meeting focused on deepening economic cooperation, energy security, and regional stability. This marks Anwar’s first official visit to Japan since 2022 and comes as part of a three-day working trip from June 8 to 10.
Anwar, who arrived in Tokyo on June 8, held talks with Takaichi — Japan’s first female prime minister, who assumed office in October 2025 — on a wide range of issues including trade, investment, and human resource development. The meeting built on the elevation of Malaysia-Japan relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in December 2023.
Key outcomes include a significant 20-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement between Malaysia’s Petronas and Japan’s JERA, under which Petronas will supply 2 million tons of LNG annually. The leaders also witnessed the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and Letters of Intent covering energy transition, healthcare, security, and maritime cooperation.
In a joint statement issued after the meeting, both sides affirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation in security, economy, and people-to-people exchanges while addressing regional challenges, including maritime security in the Indo-Pacific.
Anwar is also scheduled to attend the 31st Nikkei Forum during his visit, where he is expected to deliver remarks on Malaysia’s economic outlook and regional integration.
The visit underscores the strong and longstanding friendship between Malaysia and Japan, with both nations aiming to enhance supply chain resilience and mutual prosperity amid global uncertainties.
