KUALA LUMPUR, April 26, 2026 — Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysia to urgently reassess its economic priorities in the face of intensifying global economic challenges worsened by geopolitical tensions.
Speaking last night at the Forum Ilmuwan Malaysia MADANI Series 11, themed “Kesatuan Ummah dalam Menghadapi Krisis Geopolitik” (Muslim Unity in Facing Geopolitical Crisis), Anwar emphasised that although some economic pressures lie beyond the country’s control, the government must remain agile, responsive, and forward-looking.
“Although some economic pressures are beyond our control, the government must stay agile, responsive, and visionary in managing short-term risks while planning sustainable long-term directions,” he said.
Anwar noted that the government continues to successfully contain rises in domestic fuel prices, keeping RON95 among the cheapest in the world. However, he cautioned that this policy demands significant fiscal commitment and must be reviewed prudently to ensure medium- and long-term sustainability.
“Current developments require us to strengthen our capacity to forecast and confront risks — both short- and medium-term — with more strategic and focused economic management as the core of national policy,” he added.
Shifting to the global stage, the Prime Minister declared that unity within the Muslim ummah (community) is no longer a choice but an urgent necessity amid a turbulent world filled with geopolitical crises.
“Our strength lies in unity grounded in principles, centred on justice and universal human values. Every step and policy taken must be clearly directed towards opposing all forms of oppression and defending the rights of the oppressed, particularly our brothers and sisters in Palestine,” Anwar stressed.
The forum is part of the ongoing MADANI series aimed at strengthening intellectual discourse in support of the Malaysia MADANI agenda.
