SHAH ALAM April 23, 2026 – Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Wong Siew Ki (DAP) is under fire after proposing modern closed-system pig farming during yesterday’s Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) debate on the royal address.
Wong told the House that pig farming should not be treated differently from other livestock industries because pollution, hygiene, and health risks are similar across animal farming. She argued the issue touches on equal rights guaranteed under Article 8(2) of the Federal Constitution.
However, she opened her remarks by fully supporting the Sultan of Selangor’s stand against environmental pollution. “Sri Kembangan agrees that industrial activities cannot be compromised if it causes environmental pollution,” she said, using formal royal language such as “Menjunjung kasih” and “Memohon ampun Tuanku” (I beg your pardon, Your Highness).
She proposed that Selangor explore “closed and modern agriculture system including zero discharge concept through our technology and left over to biogas as well electric energy.” Wong noted the system has proven successful in other countries and would reduce long-term reliance on food imports.
Her comments drew swift condemnation.
Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar called the proposal disrespectful to the Sultan’s decree banning pig farming statewide. He demanded the assembly speaker suspend Wong for up to 12 months.
Selangor BN communications director Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos labelled her remarks “rude” and said: “She can get out of Selangor if she does not want to accede to the Selangor Sultan’s wishes.”
The controversy stems from Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s February 2026 decree ordering the end of all pig farming in the state to prevent air and river pollution and maintain social harmony. His Royal Highness suggested importing pork to meet non-Muslim demand instead.
Social media user Jason Yew defended Wong, posting the full video of her speech with the caption: “Tular dakwaan kononnya ADUN Seri Kembangan bersikap biadab… Namun, jika kita teliti video penuh perbahasan ini, naratif yang dimainkan pihak tertentu adalah jauh menyimpang daripada fakta.”
Yew highlighted that Wong directed her “dukacita” (regret) at politicians politicising the issue, not the palace, and that she began by affirming the Sultan’s environmental concerns.
The episode has reignited debate over the balance between food security, environmental protection, constitutional rights, and respect for the monarchy in Selangor.
