PUTRAJAYA, April 18, 2026 – Malaysia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) has welcomed a new strategic partnership with Australia aimed at strengthening the fertilizer supply chain and ensuring the country’s long-term food security.
In a media statement issued today, KPKM said the cooperation stems from high-level discussions between Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The leaders addressed growing concerns over global energy crises and geopolitical tensions that continue to disrupt fertilizer supplies worldwide, posing risks to food production.
Under the agreement, Australia will supply Malaysia with critical minerals, particularly rock phosphate – the primary raw material used in fertilizer manufacturing. In return, Malaysia will provide Australia with processed nitrogen-based fertilizers such as urea, leveraging its strength as a downstream fertilizer producer.
“This cooperation reflects a mutually complementary approach between the two countries, with Australia as a major exporter of mineral sources and Malaysia as a producer of nitrogen-based fertilizer downstream products,” the ministry stated.
Both governments will now focus on detailing implementation mechanisms through continuous engagement involving relevant agencies and key industry players, including PETRONAS, to ensure smooth and effective execution.
The partnership is expected to secure Malaysia’s access to essential agricultural inputs, strengthen the domestic fertilizer industry, and reduce risks to the national food supply. It will directly support the production of key staples such as rice and vegetables, helping maintain stable food availability amid global uncertainties.
In addition to fertilizers, the two nations agreed to expand cooperation in halal meat processing and trade.
The MADANI Government continues to prioritise domestic needs, ensuring a stable and sustainable food supply while protecting Malaysia’s agricultural and food security sector, the ministry added.
The announcement was made via the official KPKM X account (@kpkmmalaysia) this morning, carrying the hashtags #MADANIBekerja #MalaysiaMADANI #taatsetia #CukupDanTerjamin #KPKMMalaysia.
This latest bilateral initiative underscores Malaysia’s proactive approach in building resilient supply chains to shield the nation from external shocks and guarantee sufficient food for its people.
