CYBERJAYA, MALAYSIA April 1, 2026 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into three individuals suspected of disseminating false information about the new electricity tariff increase on digital platforms.
In a media statement issued today, MCMC said the suspects allegedly posted misleading content on Facebook, Threads, and WhatsApp. The fake posts are believed to have misused graphic elements from a news agency and were edited from official Astro AWANI material.
“According to complaints received, the content disseminated by all the suspects regarding the electricity tariff increase is false and can create negative perceptions that could lead to anxiety and panic among the public,” the statement read.
The investigation is being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
MCMC stressed that it takes seriously any abuse of digital platforms aimed at misleading the public with fake news.
“Strict action will be taken against any individual found violating existing laws,” it added.
The commission also reminded the public to use digital platforms responsibly and avoid uploading or sharing content that could undermine social harmony and public order.
MCMC released images showing the recording of statements from the individuals involved in the case (see attached photos).
The case is ongoing.
