WASHINGTON D.C. March 4, 2026 – The White House on Wednesday accused Iran of turning its back on multiple U.S. diplomatic offers, claiming Tehran’s refusal demonstrated that building a nuclear weapon to threaten America was its top priority.
In a strongly worded statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the official @WhiteHouse account, officials declared:
“SIMPLY PUT: Iran refused to say yes to peace, and its refusal made clear that its number-one priority was building a nuclear weapon with which to threaten the United States of America.”
The post, which has garnered significant engagement, includes a video of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressing reporters during a briefing. Leavitt elaborated that U.S. negotiators had presented Iran with several proposals before the current military campaign, including lifting sanctions and offering joint civil nuclear cooperation. Iran rejected all of them, she said.
“Unfortunately, the terrorist Iranian regime refused to negotiate in good faith. They chose this path of violence and destruction and they are reaping the consequences of that horrible decision,” Leavitt stated, according to multiple reports of the briefing. She added that Iran “rejected the path of peace because the terrorists in charge of this regime wanted to build nuclear weapons to use against Americans and our allies.”
The remarks come as the United States and Israel continue Operation Epic Fury, a major joint military campaign launched on February 28, 2026. The operation has involved hundreds of strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, ballistic missile production sites, naval assets, and leadership compounds. U.S. officials have described the objectives as destroying Iran’s missile industry, annihilating its navy, and preventing the regime from acquiring nuclear weapons.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly emphasized that diplomacy was attempted first. Administration officials noted that direct and indirect talks, including meetings involving U.S. envoys in Geneva and Oman, failed to yield progress. Trump has stated that Iran would have attacked Israel and potentially the U.S. if preemptive action had not been taken.
Iran has reported over 1,000 deaths from the strikes, including civilians, while the U.S. maintains that operations focus on military targets and do not intentionally harm civilians. Iranian retaliation has included missile attacks on U.S. bases in the region and attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz.
The White House post tags @PressSec and frames the message as a clear justification for ongoing operations, with Leavitt stressing: “When President Trump makes a threat… President Trump does not bluff.”
As the conflict enters its sixth day, the administration continues to monitor developments in Tehran, where reports indicate significant disruption to the Iranian leadership structure.
This statement from the White House underscores the administration’s position that military action was a necessary response to Iran’s rejection of peace and its pursuit of nuclear capabilities. Further updates are expected as operations proceed.
