WASHINGTON, D.C. March 2, 2026 – U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland) sharply criticized the Trump administration today for launching military strikes against Iran that he described as an unauthorized “regime-change war of choice” lacking public support and plagued by inconsistent explanations.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the senator stated:
“Not only has this Admin launched a regime-change war of choice that the American people don’t want, they can’t even get their story straight about why they did it.
American servicemembers and hundreds of civilians have been killed — and all they can do is lie.”
The post, which includes a video appearing to highlight conflicting statements from administration officials, has already drawn significant attention and heated replies from both supporters and critics of the operation.
The U.S.-Israeli strikes began on February 28, 2026, targeting Iranian leadership compounds, nuclear facilities, and missile sites. Reports confirm the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior regime figures. President Trump has described the operation as limited but potentially lasting “several weeks,” with stated goals of neutralizing Iran’s ballistic missile and naval capabilities, preventing nuclear weapon development, and ending Tehran’s support for terrorist groups.
However, Van Hollen and other Democrats argue the action constitutes an illegal regime-change effort conducted without congressional approval, in violation of the War Powers Resolution. At least six American servicemembers have been reported killed, alongside heavy Iranian civilian casualties.
The senator’s remarks come as public debate intensifies over the justification, scope, and long-term consequences of the operation. Van Hollen has previously called for strict adherence to congressional war powers and transparency from the White House.
