WASHINGTON, D.C. February 28, 2026 – U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan) sharply criticized President Donald Trump on Saturday for launching what she described as “major military action” against Iran in coordination with Israel, warning that the operation risks a wider regional war without proper justification or congressional approval.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) posted at approximately 10:12 a.m. EST, Slotkin stated: “Americans woke up this morning to news that the U.S. and Israel have started major military action against Iran. Unlike the U.S. strike on Iran back in June, this operation doesn’t appear to be a one-and-done.”
The strikes, which began early Saturday, have triggered explosions across Tehran and other Iranian cities, with Iran launching retaliatory attacks on U.S. bases and targets in the region. President Trump has described the operation — reportedly codenamed “Epic Fury” by the U.S. — as aimed at eliminating threats from the Iranian regime, including calls for regime change.
Slotkin, a former CIA officer who served three tours in Iraq, acknowledged her deep distrust of Iran’s government, calling it “a state sponsor of terror, responsible for the deaths of Americans.”
“I have no love lost for the Iranian government,” she wrote. “They’re a state sponsor of terror… I saw it up close in Iraq and elsewhere.”
However, she stressed that decisions of war and peace require the highest level of scrutiny.
“But issues of war and peace should be treated with the utmost consequence,” Slotkin continued. “President Trump hasn’t made his case to the American people. He hasn’t laid out the goals or the imminent threat posed by Iran that justifies risking a wider regional war. And he hasn’t followed the Constitution and brought this issue before Congress before committing our nation to war.”
The senator highlighted Trump’s own past criticisms of previous administrations for rushing into military action without clear objectives, noting that “most elected leaders — including President Trump himself — have condemned the rush to war without clear goals in the past.”
She urged Congress to return to Washington immediately to debate the matter, adding concerns for American servicemembers and Michigan families with relatives in the Middle East who are now at risk as Iran strikes multiple countries.
Slotkin’s statement comes as live reports confirm ongoing U.S.-Israeli operations targeting Iranian leadership, military, and nuclear-related sites, with Tehran vowing a “crushing response.” The developments mark a dramatic escalation in long-standing tensions between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and former national security official, Slotkin’s voice carries weight on Middle East policy. Her call for constitutional process echoes broader Democratic concerns about executive war powers.
