WASHINGTON, D.C. January 14, 2026 – U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) called for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and greater accountability for federal immigration agents during a Capitol Hill press conference, in response to the fatal shooting of Minneapolis resident Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) on January 14, Omar honored Good, describing her as a 37-year-old mother of three, a writer, and a poet known for her kindness and community advocacy.
“Renee Nicole Good should be alive,” Omar stated in the post accompanying the video. “We’ll continue to fight until we achieve real justice and accountability. That begins with impeaching Kristi Noem and ensuring no federal agent can act as judge, jury, and executioner in our streets.”
During the press conference, broadcast live on C-SPAN, Omar provided more details about the incident and Good’s character:
“Today, we are honoring the life and memory of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, a writer and poet,” Omar said. “Renee’s mother remembers her as one of the kindest people she has ever known… Anyone who knew her says Renee spent her life caring for others, always putting their needs first. Her deep love for community drove her to stand up for her immigrant neighbors.”
According to Omar, Good had just dropped off her six-year-old son at school and was acting as a legal observer when she was shot by an ICE agent in south Minneapolis on January 7.
“ICE’s reckless actions have taken a mother from three children, a partner from a wife, and inflicted unfathomable pain on our communities,” Omar continued. “We will not stop fighting until we achieve real justice and accountability… It also includes full and transparent investigation and legal action against ICE.”
Omar emphasized community solidarity in the aftermath, noting that Minneapolis residents have “shown up for one another with love” despite the tragedy. “That is what Renee stood for. She died because she chose love and solidarity over fear. And we will make sure the world never forgets her name.”
The shooting has sparked widespread protests in Minneapolis and beyond, with demonstrators demanding an independent investigation into ICE’s use of force. The incident occurred amid heightened immigration enforcement operations under the Trump administration.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has defended the agent’s actions in previous statements, describing the death as a tragedy but justifying the use of force in certain circumstances. Federal authorities have taken over the investigation from local officials.
Omar’s remarks have drawn criticism from some Republican figures, who accuse her of inflaming tensions against law enforcement. The congresswoman, joined by other Democratic lawmakers, has also co-led efforts in Congress to demand transparency and reforms from the Department of Homeland Security.
The case continues to develop, with ongoing protests and calls for federal oversight.
