Nik Nazmi Resigns as NRES Minister, Urges MGTC to Strengthen Net Zero 2050 Agenda

MALAYSIA, PUTRAJAYA, June 17, 2025 – Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) Minister, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, announced his resignation last week following a meeting with Puan Shareen Abdul Ghani, Chairman of the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC), at his office.

During the meeting in the Minister’s Office, Nik Nazmi, who was packing up, smiled when Shareen asked, “Is there still a chance for us to convince YB to change your mind?”

His gaze swept across the now-empty bookshelves and bare walls, once adorned with pictures, paintings, and jerseys. “OK, I understand, YB,” Shareen said, grasping the silent message.

Nik Nazmi said leaving NRES was not an easy decision after two years of leading what he described as a ‘dream team’ with outstanding commitment, capability, and credibility. However, he stressed that the decision was made for the sake of the party’s mandate for broader reforms.

“I had the option to stay, but I chose to resign,” he said.

He urged Shareen to continue steering MGTC effectively. A few months ago, Nik Nazmi visited MGTC to address staff concerns about the agency’s direction openly, alongside Shareen, Amin Ramli, and NRES Secretary-General, Dato’ Dr Ching Too.

“We agreed it was important to address issues honestly,” he said.

Nik Nazmi expressed hope that MGTC would continue to lead the climate change agenda towards the Net Zero 2050 target.

Quoting Jurgen Klopp, who once said, “I love absolutely everything about this club… But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take,” Nik Nazmi added, “That is exactly how I feel.”
