SYDNEY, December 14, 2025 – A mass shooting erupted at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, targeting a public Hanukkah event organized by Chabad of Bondi. The attack, which occurred during the first night of the Jewish Festival of Lights, left multiple people injured and several fatalities reported, according to authorities and witnesses.
New South Wales (NSW) Police confirmed that two suspects are in custody following the incident, with the operation described as ongoing. Emergency services, including ambulances and helicopters, rushed to the scene near Bondi Pavilion and the northern end of the beach, where hundreds had gathered for the family-friendly “Chanukah by the Sea” celebration starting around 5 p.m.
Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating online depicted chaos as dozens of gunshots rang out, prompting panicked crowds to flee. One bystander was hailed as a hero for disarming one of the shooters, potentially preventing further casualties.
Co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Alex Ryvchin, described the attack as “deliberate and targeted,” noting that it occurred amid a family gathering with children present. Reports indicate at least 10 people were injured, with some sources citing multiple deaths, though exact figures remain unconfirmed as investigations continue.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a statement calling the scenes “shocking and distressing,” adding that police and emergency responders are working to save lives. “My thoughts are with every person affected,” he said, confirming he had spoken with the Australian Federal Police Commissioner and NSW Premier Chris Minns.
NSW Police urged the public to avoid the area and follow official directions, warning against spreading unconfirmed rumors.
The motive for the attack has not been officially determined, but Jewish community leaders have expressed fears it was antisemitic in nature. The incident has drawn international condemnation, with solidarity messages pouring in for Australia’s Jewish community.
Authorities continue to investigate, and further updates are expected as more details emerge.
