Bukit Bendera MP Condemns Targeted Hate Campaign on TikTok, Calls for Action Against Slanderous Accounts

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, November 19.  2025 – Bukit Bendera Member of Parliament Syerleena Abdul Rashid has issued a strongly worded statement denouncing what she described as a coordinated campaign of slander, misinformation, and hate speech directed at her on TikTok by three specific accounts: @nowadd_, @cikguirisdelea, and SayapKiri (@sayapkiri916).

In a media statement released today, the DAP lawmaker emphasised that the videos posted by these accounts go far beyond legitimate political criticism, crossing into deliberate character assassination, distortion of facts, and the incitement of hatred. She highlighted how the content exploits religious sentiments and gender stereotypes to dehumanise her as a female Muslim MP.

“This is not criticism — this is a planned personal attack,” Syerleena said in the bilingual statement (Malay and English). “These videos are designed not to inform, but to provoke. They misrepresent my words, twist my intentions, and fabricate baseless claims.”

Syerleena, who has previously faced online harassment including death threats and false accusations linked to religion and communism, stressed that no parliamentarian — regardless of party, religion, or gender — should be subjected to content that promotes violence or hatred. She argued that unchecked misinformation erodes public trust in institutions and pits Malaysians against each other.

The MP urged social media platforms, particularly TikTok, to take greater responsibility by removing violating content, suspending repeat offenders, and improving content moderation in Malaysia, especially for political material amplified by algorithms.

She also called on authorities, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), to investigate the creators behind these accounts and enforce laws against harmful online behaviour. “The goal is deterrence, not revenge,” she added, warning that unaddressed boundaries embolden hate-spreaders.

As a Muslim woman in politics, Syerleena acknowledged the gendered and religious dimensions of the attacks, which she said aim to intimidate and silence female leaders. “These tactics are meant to shame us and push us out of public life. But we will not retreat. Malaysia needs more women at the decision-making table,” she declared.

She appealed to the public to remain vigilant, verify information, and reject anger-driven narratives in favour of unity and truth.

Syerleena concluded by reaffirming her commitment to serving with integrity, stating that voices of hatred “may be loud, but they will not derail the mandate given to me by the people of Penang.”

The statement comes amid growing concerns over cyberbullying and misinformation on TikTok in Malaysia, with recent cases highlighting the platform’s role in amplifying divisive content. As of now, there has been no public response from TikTok or the named accounts.
