KUALA LUMPUR. MALAYSIA Oct 27, 2025 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed leaders from ASEAN member states, dialogue partners, and special guests to a grand Gala Dinner on Tuesday evening, highlighting Malaysia’s vibrant culinary traditions and cultural heritage as emblems of regional unity.
The event, held under Anwar’s auspices alongside his spouse, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, served as a poignant tribute to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), underscoring its foundational principles of trust, mutual respect, and collaborative spirit. “This reception stands as a symbol of friendship, unity, and solidarity, the very essence of ASEAN,” Anwar stated in remarks delivered during the festivities.
In a highlight of the night, Anwar extended warm birthday wishes to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a longtime ally attending as a guest of honor. Describing Lula as a steadfast champion of social justice, South-South solidarity, and a more equitable global order, the Malaysian leader remarked, “On this special evening, we also celebrate the birth anniversary of my friend, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.”
The dinner featured an array of Malaysian delicacies, blending indigenous flavors with multicultural influences, while performances by local vocalists, an orchestra, and cultural dancers captivated attendees. Anwar expressed profound gratitude to the artists, who he said represented “every segment of our society” and delivered “a truly captivating and memorable performance.”
The gathering comes amid ongoing ASEAN summits in Kuala Lumpur, where leaders are addressing pressing issues like economic resilience and geopolitical tensions. Anwar’s hosting role as the bloc’s current chair emphasizes Malaysia’s commitment to fostering deeper ties across Asia and beyond.
