Anwar Emphasizes Economy as ASEAN’s Main Pillar, Targets Fourth Largest in the World by 2030

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept 25, 2025 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to driving inclusive economic growth as its primary objective, while aiming for the status of the world’s fourth largest economic bloc by 2030.

Anwar arrived back in the country from Timor-Leste last night and immediately attended the Gala Dinner at Perdana Botanical Garden in conjunction with the 57th ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting (AEM). The event gathered economic ministers from ASEAN member states as well as regional dialogue partners.

“As ASEAN Chair, I emphasize that the economic pillar remains our primary goal, driving a regional community that is integrated, competitive, and resilient since the establishment of the AEC (ASEAN Economic Community) in 2015,” Anwar said in a brief address to the honored guests.

He highlighted ASEAN’s current achievement as the world’s fifth largest economy, expressing confidence in leaping to the fourth spot thanks to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and upgraded trade agreements.

However, Anwar stressed that ASEAN cannot afford to be a “passive observer.” Instead, the bloc must lead by strengthening supply chains, empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), investing in environmental sustainability, and embracing technological innovation.

The next initiative includes a joint meeting of ASEAN Foreign and Economic Ministers next month, seen as a “historic step” to bolster cohesion in tackling geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges.

As the 2025 ASEAN Chair, Malaysia is committed to ensuring inclusive growth that leaves no member state behind. Anwar also expressed appreciation for the role of dialogue partners and welcomed Timor-Leste’s impending membership, which is expected to further solidify regional unity.

“ASEAN is not merely a region, but a promise of boundless potential that we must unlock together for the people’s well-being, cooperation with regional partners, and the future of coming generations,” he added.

The 57th AEM is taking place amid ASEAN’s efforts to fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic’s impacts and global tensions, with a focus on trade, investment, and sustainable development.
