KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, MALAYSIA, 4 January 2026 – Sabah’s Deputy Chief Minister III, who is also the Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport, Datuk Ewon Benedick, has urged young people to venture into business through proven and sustainable franchise models.
He said franchising offers significant advantages to young entrepreneurs as they receive guidance, ongoing training, and marketing support from the parent company, enabling them to build their businesses faster and more sustainably.
“I am proud to see young people getting involved in the franchise sector. For example, two of the three partners in the newly opened SugarBun Express Inanam are only 26 years old, yet they have already created 10 jobs at this outlet.
“This proves the great potential in franchise businesses. I welcome more young entrepreneurs to join this sector, especially through successful local brands,” he told reporters.

The remarks were made after he officiated the opening of SugarBun Express at EG Mall, Inanam, today.
The new outlet is SugarBun’s 165th nationwide, with the company planning to open another 40 outlets over the next three years.
Ewon also emphasised the state and federal governments’ commitment to supporting the franchise industry through various initiatives, including financing, training, and entrepreneurial guidance.
“The government is always committed to empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as one of the main drivers of the state’s economy. The franchise model is among the best platforms for young people to start a business in a more structured way,” he added.
He expressed hope that SugarBun would continue to grow as a proud Sabah franchise brand, not only across the country but also on the international stage.
