WASHINGTON D.C. March 25, 2026 – The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump will travel to Beijing for a long-awaited summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 14 and 15, following a delay caused by U.S. military operations in the ongoing conflict with Iran.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made the announcement during a briefing on Wednesday, stating: “I’m pleased to announce that President Trump’s long-awaited meeting with President Xi in China will now take place in Beijing on May 14th and 15th.”
Leavitt added that President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will host President Xi and his wife, Madame Peng Liyuan, for a reciprocal visit in Washington, D.C., at a later date to be announced this year.
The original summit dates in late March or early April were postponed as the United States focused on its involvement in the Iran conflict. The rescheduling reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts between the world’s two largest economies amid tensions over trade, technology, and regional security issues.
President Trump confirmed the updated plans on Truth Social, describing the upcoming meeting as a significant diplomatic engagement.
The summit is expected to address key bilateral issues, including trade relations and global stability, as both nations continue to navigate the broader impacts of the Iran war on energy markets and international supply chains.
This marks the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since Trump’s return to the White House, with the reciprocal visit underscoring efforts to maintain open channels of communication between Washington and Beijing.
