SELANGOR, MALAYSIA, Sept 2025 – The groundbreaking ceremony for the Semenyih Specialist Hospital (SSH) took place today, heralding a significant step toward integrating waqf principles into Malaysia’s healthcare sector, in line with the MADANI Economy’s vision to position waqf as the nation’s third economic pillar, targeting a 10% contribution to the Islamic social finance sector by 2030.

The hospital, a pioneering initiative, will be Malaysia’s first specialist facility built on syariah-compliant and waqf-based principles. It aims to deliver high-quality healthcare while ensuring sustainable revenue for state waqf institutions. Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof, who attended the ceremony, emphasized the potential of this model to expand nationwide across sectors like healthcare, education, housing, and social development.
Spanning 2.6 acres with a built-up area of 783,566 square feet, SSH will feature 261 beds, multidisciplinary specialist services, and modern parking facilities. Operated by An-Nur Healthcare Sdn Bhd, the hospital is designed to operate under Islamic commercial ethics and a waqf-based financial structure, ensuring both operational sustainability and social impact. Completion is slated for 2030.
Positioned as the “Southern Medical Gateway,” SSH aims to enhance healthcare accessibility for residents in Malaysia’s southern states while delivering world-class medical services. Dato’ Sri Fadillah also urged developers to incorporate green technology in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), supporting Malaysia’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The project exemplifies how waqf can drive innovative, community-focused solutions, setting a benchmark for sustainable development in Malaysia.
