KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA January 2, 2026 – Jelutong Member of Parliament, RSN Rayer, held a press conference today to question the police’s alleged misuse of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) in the case involving the organised crime group known as Geng Rames.
Rayer claimed that the police had used SOSMA to arrest suspects without conducting proper preliminary investigations, which contradicts standard procedures. He also revealed that the main complainant named in the charge sheet for the case is a police officer himself, raising doubts about the fairness of the trial process.
“Previously, a total of 20 men were charged at the Sungai Petani Sessions Court on 30 December with offences related to being members of the organised crime group Geng Rames since January 2024. They also face charges related to murder and drug distribution,” Rayer said.
He stressed that serious criminal cases such as murder should be tried under ordinary legal procedures, rather than through the special powers under SOSMA, which can deny the accused their basic rights, including the right to bail.
Rayer urged the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Bukit Aman, Datuk M. Kumar, to provide a detailed explanation regarding the procedural doubts in this case. He also called on the police to review the case to prevent misuse of the law.
Additionally, Rayer appealed to the government to re-evaluate and reform SOSMA, as well as to suspend its use temporarily until reforms are implemented. This call aligns with his previous criticisms of the act, which he claims is prone to abuse.
The police had earlier announced the detention of 17 members of Geng Rames from late November to early December 2025 through Operation Tiga, which successfully crippled much of the syndicate. The group is suspected of being active in violent activities in Kedah and Penang.
