MCMC Investigates Individual for Uploading Fake ‘Utusan’ Image on Facebook

CYBERJAYA,  MALAYSIA  Nov 6,  2025 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is conducting an investigation into an individual accused of uploading an edited image on the Facebook platform, which resembles a report from a local news portal titled “Anwar admits many mistakes in agreement with US”.

According to the MCMC media statement issued today, the fake image includes the logo of the Utusan Malaysia media portal and has been found to have the potential to mislead the public. Initial investigations confirmed that Utusan Malaysia has denied publishing such a report and clarified that it constitutes misuse of the newspaper’s name and logo.

“In connection with this, the suspected individual has been called in to assist with the investigation, and a statement was recorded today at the Alor Gajah District Police Headquarters (IPD Alor Gajah), Melaka,” the statement said. During the statement recording process, one mobile phone device and one SIM card were seized for the purpose of digital forensic analysis.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC also advises the public to always verify the authenticity of information before sharing it on social media, especially content that uses the identity or logo of media organizations without authorization. “The dissemination of fake content can undermine the credibility of legitimate news sources and invite legal action,” the statement added.

This media statement is also accompanied by attached images showing the statement recording process at IPD Alor Gajah, involving MCMC enforcement officers and the suspected individual.

This case is part of MCMC’s ongoing efforts to combat the spread of fake information in cyberspace, in line with the government’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of public information. Further updates on the investigation will be announced as new developments arise.
