PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA, December 13, 2025 — Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim shared today that he received a telephone call from United States President Donald J. Trump, during which the two leaders discussed the ongoing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, bilateral relations, and global issues of mutual interest.
In the call, Anwar outlined Malaysia’s position urging both Cambodia and Thailand to exercise restraint and resume dialogue through bilateral mechanisms and ASEAN frameworks.
“Malaysia remains committed to supporting de-escalation efforts, protecting civilians, and restoring regional stability, in keeping with ASEAN’s principles of good neighbourliness,” Anwar stated.
As the current Chair of ASEAN for 2025, Malaysia plans to convene a Special Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers in the near future to assess the situation and endorse measures for de-escalation.
Anwar also expressed appreciation for the United States’ active engagement with ASEAN and the confidence shown in Malaysia’s leadership role as ASEAN Chair.
The discussion comes amid renewed clashes along the Cambodia-Thailand border, following a peace accord brokered earlier this year with involvement from both Malaysia and the US.
