Malaysia Shines at WSIS+20, Telecommunications Achievements Recognized Globally

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, July 12, 2025 -Malaysia’s participation in the “World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20)” held from July 7 to 11 in Geneva, Switzerland, once again highlighted the country’s success in advancing the telecommunications sector on a global scale.

The National Information Distribution Centre (NADI) achieved remarkable success with the NADI Banggi Island Initiative, which was crowned the winner of the WSIS Prize 2025 . This initiative, led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), successfully provided digital literacy, skills training, and economic opportunities to the residents of Banggi Island, one of Malaysia’s most remote island communities.

NADI was selected as one of the 18 global winners from a pool of 970 international projects, marking a significant recognition of Malaysia’s commitment to empowering rural communities through technology. Malaysia also celebrated success in four other categories, including the Stingray II Pulau Ketam Project, a strategic collaboration between MCMC and Telekom Malaysia (TM), which received recognition in the information and communication infrastructure category.

Additionally, WSIS+20 served as a platform for Malaysia to share perspectives and proposals on current issues such as the capacity to provide infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence (AI) technology, as well as ethics and moral guidelines in AI usage.

The Minister of Communications, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, announced Malaysia’s renomination as a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the term 2027–2030, reflecting the nation’s desire to continue playing a crucial role in global telecommunications policy governance.

During the summit, Fahmi also conducted 10 bilateral meetings with counterparts from various countries, including Algeria, Senegal, Ghana, Somalia, Kuwait, the United Kingdom, and Cambodia, strengthening diplomatic relations and international cooperation.

MADANI Government, through the Ministry of Communications, will remain committed to empowering communities through the use of inclusive and sustainable technology, aligning with the nation’s digital development goals.
