PUTRAJAYA. Malaysia, 28 July 2025 – The Governments of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand issued a joint press release following a special meeting hosted by Malaysia in Putrajaya. The event, chaired by Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Anwar Ibrahim, saw participation from Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei HUN Manet, Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, and was co-organized with the United States and the People’s Republic of China to promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation.

PM Hun Manet and Acting PM Phumtham expressed their commitment to an immediate ceasefire and return to normalcy. U.S. President Donald J. Trump has been in contact with leaders of both nations, urging a peaceful solution, while China has maintained close dialogue with Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, and relevant countries to foster ceasefire and peace.
Both Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding, including a ceasefire effective from 24:00 hours (local time) on 28 July 2025, marking the first step toward de-escalation and restoration of peace and security. Informal meetings of regional commanders (Regional Military 1 and 2 on the Thai side, and Regional Military 4 and 5 on the Cambodian side) are scheduled for 07:00 hours on 29 July 2025, followed by a Defence Attachés meeting. A meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) is set for 4 August 2025, hosted by Cambodia.
As ASEAN’s current Chair, Malaysia stands ready to coordinate an observer team to verify and ensure implementation, with ASEAN member states participating in the observation effort, reflecting a regional commitment to peace. Both sides have agreed to resume direct communications between their Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers, and Defence Ministers.
Foreign and Defence Ministers from Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand have been tasked with developing a detailed mechanism for ceasefire implementation, verification, and reporting, laying a foundation for sustained peace and accountability. The meeting reaffirmed the shared resolve to uphold international law, peaceful co-existence, and multilateral cooperation for a just resolution.
