LOS ANGELES January 5, 2026 – James Gunn’s highly acclaimed Superman (2025), the film that kicked off the new DC Universe, has received a prestigious nomination at the 53rd Annual Annie Awards. The movie is recognized in the category of Best Character Animation – Live Action, honoring the exceptional work by VFX studio Framestore on the beloved character Krypto, Superman’s super-powered canine companion.
The nomination credits animators Loic Mireault, Michael Elder, Philipp Winterstein, Victor Dinis, and Diego De Paula Pereira Batista for bringing Krypto to life with remarkable realism and emotional depth. Framestore’s contribution has been widely praised, particularly for scenes that blend the fully CGI dog seamlessly with live-action performances, including tender moments that captured audiences’ hearts.
One standout example is the intimate scene showing Clark Kent (David Corenswet) asleep in his Smallville bedroom, with Krypto peacefully resting on his chest—a moment that highlights the film’s themes of family, home, and humanity.
Superman competes against strong contenders in the category, including A Minecraft Movie (Weta FX), Captain America: Brave New World (Weta FX), How to Train Your Dragon (Framestore), and Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age (Framestore).
The Annie Awards, presented by ASIFA-Hollywood, celebrate excellence in animation and will take place on February 21, 2026, at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Congratulations to James Gunn, the cast, and the entire team at Framestore and DC Studios for this well-deserved recognition. Krypto’s charming presence has proven to be one of the film’s breakout elements, earning acclaim for both its technical achievement and emotional resonance.
