TEHRAN, IRAN March 3, 2026 – As Iran reels from the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israeli airstrikes, an official has assured the public that the process to choose his successor will move quickly.
A member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts told the state-run ISNA news agency that the selection of a new Supreme Leader “will not be lengthy.” The statement was reported by Al Jazeera and other international outlets, signaling efforts to avoid a prolonged power vacuum during an escalating regional war.
Khamenei, who ruled Iran for nearly 37 years, was killed on February 28, 2026, in strikes that also claimed the lives of several senior military figures. In response, authorities formed a three-member transitional council to govern temporarily. The council includes President Masoud Pezeshkian, Supreme Court Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi.
Under Article 111 of Iran’s Constitution, the 88-member Assembly of Experts must now select a permanent successor “as soon as possible.” The body has pledged to set aside personal or factional preferences in the choice, according to reports citing the official, identified in some sources as Ali Moalemi.
War Context Intensifies Urgency
The leadership transition unfolds against a backdrop of intense military conflict. Israeli and US strikes have targeted Tehran, Beirut, and Iranian military and nuclear sites, while Iran has retaliated by closing the Strait of Hormuz and launching drone and missile attacks on energy infrastructure and US-linked targets across the Gulf region, including a strike on the US embassy in Riyadh.
Civilian casualties have surpassed 550 in Iran alone, with the regional death toll exceeding 600. US President Donald Trump has stated that the operations could last around four weeks.
The swift succession pledge aims to project stability as Iran faces its most severe crisis in decades. Potential candidates include senior clerics, though no names have been officially shortlisted.
Life News Agency will continue monitoring developments in this rapidly evolving situation, including updates from the Assembly of Experts and the ongoing conflict.
