WASHINGTON, D.C. March 3, 2026 – Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee issued a sharp rebuke of President Donald Trump’s ongoing military campaign against Iran, accusing the administration of choosing war over diplomacy in a move they warn will destabilize the region and burden Americans.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) today, the committee’s Democratic staff account stated: “We can’t bomb our way to peace. Trump’s choice to go to war instead of pursuing more diplomacy was a reckless mistake that will lead to even more challenges and instability. The American people will shoulder the consequences.”
The statement was accompanied by a video clip underscoring the Democrats’ call for restraint.
The criticism comes as the U.S.-led Operation Epic Fury enters its fifth day. U.S. and Israeli forces launched major airstrikes on Iranian targets on February 28, 2026, destroying key nuclear facilities, missile sites, naval assets, and proxy networks. The operation resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials.
President Trump has defended the strikes as essential “peace through strength,” outlining goals to eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat, dismantle its missile capabilities, and cut off funding for terrorism. He has projected the campaign could last four to five weeks—or longer if needed—and has not ruled out deploying ground troops.
House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) and other Democrats have repeatedly argued that the strikes lack congressional authorization and bypass diplomatic channels that could have de-escalated tensions. Earlier statements from Meeks and Vice Ranking Member Rep. Gabe Amo (D-RI) echoed concerns over “shifting justifications” and the risks of prolonged conflict without a clear exit strategy.
Congress is expected to debate resolutions this week aimed at reasserting its war powers and limiting further military action in Iran. Democrats, joined by a small number of Republicans, are pushing for an immediate vote to require formal approval for continued operations.
The escalation follows months of failed indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran over its nuclear program. Iranian retaliatory strikes have already targeted U.S. and Israeli interests, and reports indicate at least six American service members have been killed in the conflict so far.
As the situation develops, critics warn that further escalation could ignite a wider regional war, while the White House maintains the operation is necessary to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran from threatening global stability.
