BARCELONA. SPAIN April 12, 2026 – The Global Sumud Flotilla, an international civilian-led initiative aimed at challenging Israel’s blockade on Gaza and delivering urgent humanitarian aid, has begun its second major mission, with nearly double the participation of its previous effort.
According to TRT World, around 70 boats carrying up to 1,000 volunteers from 70 countries are expected to set sail from Barcelona today. Spain accounts for the largest contingent of participants, underscoring strong European support for the flotilla.
The mission follows a previous attempt in 2025 that was intercepted. Organizers describe the effort as a direct challenge to what they call Israel’s illegal blockade on Gaza, with the goal of breaking the siege and delivering critical supplies, including food and medicine, to the besieged Palestinian territory.
Footage shared by TRT World shows a vibrant scene at the Barcelona harbor yesterday, with dozens of sailboats and yachts adorned with Palestinian flags fluttering in the wind. Signs reading “FREE GAZA” and “NZ GOVERNMENT MUST SANCTION ISRAEL” were prominently displayed, alongside volunteers wearing shirts emblazoned with messages like “ANTISIONISTA SIEMPRE” (Always Anti-Zionist) and maps of Palestine. Crowds gathered along the docks as boats prepared for departure, with many participants wearing keffiyehs and waving flags in solidarity.
The flotilla, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla Spring 2026 Mission, is one of the largest civilian maritime efforts of its kind. Pre-departure gatherings on April 11 featured public events in Barcelona, drawing international attention.
Israel maintains the naval blockade on Gaza for security reasons, citing threats from groups like Hamas. Flotilla organizers and supporters argue the blockade constitutes collective punishment and violates international law, calling for peaceful humanitarian intervention.
As the boats prepare to navigate the Mediterranean toward Gaza, all eyes are on whether the flotilla will reach its destination or face interception, as has happened in past attempts.
This mission comes amid ongoing international scrutiny of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Life News Agency will continue to monitor developments as the Global Sumud Flotilla embarks on this historic journey.
