WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 3, 2026 – U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem has sharply criticised Senate Democrats for what she described as a “Democrat-led shutdown” of the department, calling it reckless, unnecessary and a direct threat to American national security.
In a statement amplified by the official White House Rapid Response account on X, Secretary Noem said:
“The latest Democrat-led shutdown of @DHSgov is reckless, it’s unnecessary, and it undermines the American national security… It is Senate Democrats who’ve chosen not to fund the department, and have held this department hostage. As a result, critical national security missions, including border security, immigration enforcement, aviation security, disaster response, cyber security, and the protection of critical infrastructure are all being strained… More than 100,000 dedicated DHS Employees are once again being asked to work without pay for the 3rd time in just 5 months.”
The partial funding lapse affecting DHS began in mid-February 2026 and has now stretched into its third week. It is the third such disruption in the past five months, forcing tens of thousands of frontline personnel at agencies including TSA, Customs and Border Protection, FEMA, the Coast Guard and cybersecurity units to continue working without guaranteed pay.
The White House has framed the impasse as Democrats holding national security hostage amid broader disputes over immigration enforcement and recent U.S. military actions in the Middle East. Secretary Noem’s remarks come one day after she testified before the Senate on oversight issues related to the department.
A video clip of Secretary Noem delivering the statement is attached to the White House post, which has already garnered significant engagement on social media.
Life News Agency will continue monitoring developments as Congress works to resolve the funding standoff.
